Hyperhidrosis Treatment/Anti-sweating Axilla

Botulinum toxin treatment for hyperhidrosis — reducing excessive sweating of the underarms and hands with a discreet, well-tolerated, evidence-based protocol.

Overview

Understanding Hyperhidrosis Treatment/Anti-sweating Axilla

Hyperhidrosis — excessive sweating beyond what is needed to regulate body temperature — is common, under-recognised and treatable. We use botulinum toxin injections to temporarily block the chemical signals to the sweat glands in the underarms and palms. The protocol is well established, the safety profile is good, and most clients see a dramatic reduction in sweating from a single session lasting around 6–9 months. This is medical treatment, not cosmetic.

Evidence-Based

Established botulinum toxin protocol with strong clinical evidence.

Long-Lasting

Typically 6–9 months of dryness from a single session, often longer for hands.

Discreet & Quick

30-minute appointment, no general anaesthetic, return to normal activities the same day.

Medical Approach

Treated as a clinical condition, not a cosmetic add-on.

Who It's For

Is this category right for you?

The clients who benefit most from hyperhidrosis treatment/anti-sweating axilla typically share one or more of these goals.

  • Persistent excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis)
  • Excessive sweating of the hands (palmar hyperhidrosis)
  • Sweat-related social anxiety, ruined clothing, and disrupted work or relationships
  • Clients who have tried clinical-strength antiperspirants without sufficient relief
  • Adults seeking a non-permanent, well-tolerated alternative to surgical sympathectomy

When sweating becomes a clinical problem

Most people sweat. Hyperhidrosis is sweating well beyond what is needed for thermoregulation — to the point where it affects clothing, posture, professional life, romantic life, sport, or simply the basic comfort of getting through a day. It tends to start in adolescence or early adulthood and rarely resolves on its own.

Antiperspirants — including clinical-strength formulations — are a sensible first step. When they don't deliver enough relief, botulinum toxin injection is the most effective non-surgical option with a well-documented safety profile and predictable duration.

What treatment involves

A typical underarm hyperhidrosis session at Aesthetic Clinique:

  1. Confirmation of suitability — clinical history, examination, ruling out causes that need investigating rather than treating cosmetically.
  2. Mapping the affected area — sometimes using a starch-iodine test to delineate the active sweating zone.
  3. Botulinum toxin injection — many small, superficial injections across the underarm, with very fine needles. Topical anaesthetic helps; the procedure itself is brief.
  4. Aftercare — written instructions; most clients carry on with a normal day.

For palmar (hand) hyperhidrosis, we use stronger numbing, sometimes a wrist nerve block. Treatment is more uncomfortable but the result is usually equally effective.

What to expect afterwards

Sweat reduction starts to appear at 3–7 days and reaches full effect at 10–14 days. Most clients describe it as "completely changed" rather than slightly improved. We schedule a two-week review where small adjustments are included if needed.

Repeat treatment is typically once or twice a year. Many of our hyperhidrosis clients tell us this is the most quality-of-life-changing medical treatment they have ever had.

When this isn't the right route

Some patterns of excessive sweating signal an underlying medical issue (thyroid, hormonal, infectious, neurological, certain medications) that needs investigation rather than masking with botulinum toxin. Sudden onset, generalised whole-body sweating, night sweats with weight loss, or sweating with other systemic symptoms always need GP review first. We will redirect rather than treat where appropriate.

FAQs

Hyperhidrosis Treatment/Anti-sweating Axilla — questions we are asked most

How effective is botulinum toxin for excessive sweating?

For axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis, most clients see an 80–90% reduction in sweating from the treated area, lasting 6–9 months on average. For palmar (hand) hyperhidrosis, reduction is similar but injections are more uncomfortable and treatment may need to be slightly more frequent.

How long does the treatment last?

Typically 6–9 months for underarms, sometimes longer with repeated treatment. Hands often re-sweat slightly sooner. We re-treat once sweating returns to a level that affects you — usually once or twice a year.

Is it painful?

The underarms are well tolerated — many small, very fine injections, with topical anaesthetic. Hands are noticeably more sensitive; we use stronger numbing approaches (ice, vibration, sometimes nerve block) for hand treatment. Most clients say it is uncomfortable for a few minutes rather than painful in any sustained way.

Will my body just sweat somewhere else instead?

There is no good evidence for clinically significant compensatory sweating after localised botulinum toxin treatment of the underarms or hands. This is a more well-known concern with surgical sympathectomy. Some clients notice slightly more sweat from untreated areas (back, chest) but rarely to a degree that troubles them.

Are there side effects?

Common: mild bruising, occasional brief tenderness. For hand treatment specifically, temporary mild weakness in fine grip can occur and resolves. We discuss known risks in writing before treatment and you sign informed consent. Botulinum toxin has a long-established safety record at the doses used for hyperhidrosis.

Can hyperhidrosis treatment be done as an extra at an aesthetic appointment?

Yes — but we still treat it as a medical assessment. We confirm the pattern of sweating, ask about prior treatments and rule out underlying causes that need investigation rather than masking with botulinum toxin. We are happy to combine with cosmetic appointments where it makes sense.
