Treatment Summary
Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) injectable that combines two effects in one product: an immediate volumising and lifting effect from its gel carrier, and a longer-term collagen-stimulating effect from the CaHA microspheres themselves. It is widely used for jawline definition, hand rejuvenation and skin tightening, with results lasting up to 18 months.
Also known as: calcium hydroxylapatite · CaHA filler · Radiesse hands · jawline bio-stimulator · Radiesse West Hampstead
Key Benefits
Two Effects, One Product
Immediate gel-carrier lift plus long-term collagen stimulation from the CaHA microspheres.
Jawline Definition
One of the strongest tools for sharper jawline projection in suitable candidates.
Hand Rejuvenation
FDA/CE-approved for ageing hands — restores volume over tendons and brightens skin quality.
Long-Lasting
Effects typically last up to 18 months, with collagen-induced improvements persisting longer.
What Radiesse is
Radiesse is an injectable made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. CaHA is the same mineral that makes up bone and teeth — fully biocompatible and gradually metabolised by the body. The gel carrier provides immediate volume on injection; over the following weeks, the carrier is absorbed and the microspheres remain in place, where they trigger your own fibroblasts to produce new type I collagen.
This dual mechanism — instant lift, long-term collagen — is what sets Radiesse apart from both pure hyaluronic acid filler and pure bio-stimulators like Sculptra.
What Radiesse is good for
Radiesse has three core indications in our clinic:
- Jawline definition — particularly in clients with adequate skin and underlying bony projection, where it gives a sharper, more sculpted jawline than equivalent hyaluronic acid volumes
- Hand rejuvenation — one of the few injectables specifically approved and well-evidenced for ageing hands
- Skin tightening (hyperdiluted protocols) — diluted Radiesse delivered over the lower face, neck or décolletage to drive collagen stimulation across a larger area
It is not the right tool for the lips, the tear troughs, or any very superficial location — those need hyaluronic acid filler or polynucleotides.
How it differs from hyaluronic acid filler
The key practical difference is reversibility. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if the result is not what was wanted, or in the rare event of vascular complication. Radiesse cannot be dissolved — it is metabolised naturally over 12–18 months. Because of that, we use it only in indications where placement is straightforward, irreversibility is acceptable, and the longer duration is genuinely useful.
Who suits the treatment
Radiesse suits adults from their late 30s onwards, particularly those wanting longer-lasting jawline definition or hand rejuvenation. Skin quality matters: very thin skin in the lower face may make CaHA palpable, in which case we will recommend an alternative. We also avoid Radiesse in active autoimmune disease, in pregnancy/breastfeeding, and in clients with a history of keloid or granuloma formation.
What happens on the day
Treatment takes around 45–60 minutes. We use either cannula or needle depending on the area, and topical or local anaesthetic for comfort. For hands, Radiesse is mixed with lidocaine on the day; the procedure uses a single dorsal entry point with fan-like spreading and gentle massage to distribute the product evenly.
Results timeline
You will see the volume effect immediately, with some additional swelling for the first 24–72 hours. The collagen-induced improvement develops over the following 8–12 weeks. We typically review at 4–6 weeks and may plan a second syringe for full correction at that point.
Maintenance
Most clients return at 12–18 months for a single maintenance session. The collagen-induced improvement persists somewhat longer than the visible volume itself, which means waiting a few months past the volume tail is often acceptable.
What to Expect
- 1
Assessment and Planning
We map facial proportions, jawline definition or hand volume goals and confirm Radiesse over alternatives.
- 2
Anaesthesia
Topical or local anaesthetic is used for face; for hands we usually mix Radiesse with anaesthetic on the day.
- 3
Injection
Delivered via cannula or needle in the appropriate plane. Hand treatment uses a single dorsal entry point and fanning.
- 4
Massage and Follow-Up
We massage the product evenly and review at 4–6 weeks. A second syringe is sometimes planned for fuller correction.
Suitability
Aesthetic care is highly individual. The points below are general guidance — final suitability for radiesse treatment/collagen treatment is always confirmed in your consultation.
Often suitable for
- Jawline definition in clients with adequate skin and underlying bone projection
- Hands showing tendon and vein prominence with volume loss
- Mid-face support where structural lift is needed
- Skin laxity in the lower face and neck (hyperdiluted protocols)
- Clients seeking a longer-lasting alternative to hyaluronic acid filler in suitable areas
May not be suitable if
- Lips, tear troughs and very superficial periorbital placements
- Very thin skin overlying the jawline where palpability would be cosmetic
- Active autoimmune or inflammatory connective-tissue disease
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- History of keloid or granuloma formation
Aftercare
Caring for your results
A few simple steps in the first 24–48 hours help your results settle as expected.
- Mild swelling and bruising for 2–7 days, especially on hands
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol for 24–48 hours
- Avoid heavy hand massage or manual work for 24 hours after hand treatment
- Mild tenderness in the treated area is normal and settles within a week
- Photograph at baseline and 4–6 weeks for honest comparison

Radiesse is FDA-approved and CE-marked, with over 15 years of clinical use globally and over a decade of evidence specifically for hand rejuvenation. The CaHA microspheres are biocompatible (the same mineral as in bone and teeth) and biodegradable. Peer-reviewed studies demonstrate sustained type I collagen induction following injection, and hyperdiluted protocols are well-supported for skin tightening of the lower face, neck and décolletage.
